Pole Barn Insulation

Pole Barn Insulation in Alexandria

Pole Barn Insulation Matched to Your Alexandria, Minnesota Building

We insulate pole barns, machine sheds, and steel agricultural buildings for farmers, residential property owners, and commercial property owners. At Tri County Foam Insulation, we evaluate each structure and its intended use before recommending a system. A heated workshop and an unconditioned equipment building have different insulation needs.

Locally owned and operated since 2000, we complete agricultural, residential, commercial, and industrial projects throughout the Alexandria area. Our work includes new buildings and existing structures that need an insulation upgrade.

Cold-Climate Pole Barn Insulation in Douglas County

Douglas County is in International Energy Conservation Code climate zone 6A, which is classified as Cold. This zone experiences between 7,200 and 9,000 heating degree days on a 65-degree basis. Heating degree days measure how much and how often outdoor temperatures fall below the baseline used to estimate heating demand.

Cold outdoor temperatures can cool steel siding and liner panels enough for moisture in warmer air to condense on the metal. This surface moisture is commonly called sweating. The building’s use, indoor humidity, ventilation, and temperature all affect when condensation develops.

Air Sealing Across Corrugated Steel

Corrugations and unsealed joints in steel liner panels can allow outside air to move through the building assembly. Spray foam conforms to irregular surfaces and can create a continuous air barrier across gaps that are difficult to address with rigid or rolled products.

A spray foam system selected for vapor control can also provide a vapor-barrier effect that helps limit condensation on steel-sided surfaces. Product type and installed thickness matter, so we assess the building before identifying the appropriate material and application.

Insulation Options for New & Existing Pole Buildings

We install several materials rather than assigning one product to every pole building. Our recommendations account for whether the building is heated, how the space is used, and whether the walls, roof, or other surfaces are being insulated.

Available pole barn insulation materials include:

Open-Cell Foam
This lower-density material has an R-value of approximately 3.5 to 3.7 per inch and expands into cavities. R-value measures how well insulation resists heat flow. The required thickness depends on the assembly and project goals.

Closed-Cell Foam
This denser material provides an R-value of roughly 6 to 7 per inch. Its greater thermal resistance per inch may suit projects where available cavity depth or vapor control is important.

Blown & Batt Insulation
Blown cellulose, blown fiberglass, and fiberglass batts provide additional options for suitable building assemblies. Pole buildings often have widely spaced posts and purlins that form deep, irregular cavities. Foam fills these spaces more readily than rolled or sheet insulation, while blown or batt products may fit other project conditions.

We provide new-construction insulation, retrofit insulation for remodeling projects, insulation replacement, and evaluations of existing materials. Our team has more than 100 years of combined experience selecting insulation systems for varied property types, including agricultural and commercial buildings.

Our Pole Barn Insulation Assessment & Installation Process

Every project begins with an insulation inspection or evaluation. We assess the structure and discuss how the space is used before recommending an insulation type. This approach distinguishes the needs of a new heated building from those of an existing machine shed receiving targeted upgrades.

After the evaluation, we explain the recommended material and installation scope. Our licensed, bonded, and insured team installs premium spray foam and other insulation materials for new construction, remodeling, and replacement work, including commercial projects.
